LOWCOUNTRY TENNIS ASSOCIATION - NEWS

 

CONGRATULATIONS! The USTA has named Charleston, SC one of the top three tennis towns in America!  The Best Tennis Town in America contest was held by the USTA and Charleston's video entry (seen below) put the lowcountry area in the finals.  After a 10 day voting period, the top three towns were announced:  Atlanta, GA, Charleston, SC and Richmond, VA.  The winner will be announced at the US Open in August.  GO, CHARLESTON!

   

 

BIG NEWS: The LCTA has been well represented in the most recent State playoffs.  In the Senior State Playoffs held in Hilton Head, 3.5 LCTA Senior Women CTC Serves-U-Right team, captained by Elisabeth Pickelsimer finished second.  In the 4.0 - 5.0 State Playoffs held in Aiken, the LCTA was the dominant league, with almost all of the finals including an LCTA team.  The Mt. Pleasant Rec Aces Wild team, captained by Gene Owens, won the 4.0 flight and will be going to Sectionals.  The following teams were runners-up finishing second: 4.0 Men - Mt. Pleasant Muscle Tribe of Danger and Excellence (captained by Naveen Tummala); 4.5 Men - I'on (captained by Mark Mogul); and our 5.0 team - Bulldogs Rule on Ponsbury (captained by Frederick S. McKay). Congratulations to all of you on successful playoffs!

 

LOCAL NEWS:  Mark your calendars!  The LCTA will host its annual Member Party, in conjunction with a CPTL match at Family Circle Tennis Center, on Friday, October 1st at 6 pm.  Details to come...

LCTA PRIDE:  Bob Peiffer was also recognized in a Post & Courier article, which noted:   "When Peiffer took over as president of the LCTA in 1994, the organization had about 1,984 names on rosters in its various leagues.  Today, the LCTA has about 11,172 names on rosters, the second-largest league in the Southern Section of the U.S. Tennis Association, behind only Atlanta."  His leadership and many contributions to the local tennis community are much appreciated!

FAST FACT:  USTA membership in the nine USTA Southern states is at an all-time high with 185,332 members, a quarter of the USTA total.  South Carolina is up slightly from last year with 24,318 members.  We are third in the Section, behind Georgia and North Carolina, in total membership, and second only to Georgia in membership density with 533 USTA members per 100,000 residents.
